Top Six Beards of 2005

6. The Guy with a Beard of Bees
http://www.tvprty.com/Beards/Bee.beard.jpg
A total classic, this true test of a man dates back to the mid 19th century when Honest Abe Lincoln made his first address to his newly elected cabinet with a swam of bees nestled into his trademark crumb catcher. Here we have an updated take on the bee-beard. Not content to rest on the history of the bees for a beard look, this stunning champion dared to accent his insect neck warmer with a modern masterpiece of an airbrushed "Bee" t-shirt. The face may say father-next-door, but from the chin down he is all bee business.

5. Borden Capalino
http://www.tvprty.com/Beards/bordenbeard.jpg
This was the year New York City's native son freed himself from the shackles of the razor and let his facial hair be free. Too long had his white face kept his dark hairs down. While his beard may lack the density of some other Top 6ers, Captain Capalino makes up for it with a unique growth pattern. Long in some places, non-existent in others, his beard is a little slice of magical sunshine here in the city. A defiant statement to all that even if the nay sayers say nay, even is society tries to box you in and make your face shorn, don't listen. Just do you dude, just be free.

4. Noah Hoskins
http://www.tvprty.com/Beards/IMG_0301.JPG
A fine Quaker lad with a fine Quaker beard. The only reason Noah didn't land high along on this year's list is because his social setting. The farm hand in the Putney School's barn in southern Vermont he walks shoulder to shoulder with many other beard-os in a highly beard friendly environment. But in a straight up beard-to-beard, girth-to-girth beard-off, he probably walks away with the title among this year's contenders.

3. Theodore Turner
http://www.tvprty.com/Beards/IMG_1403.JPG
Maybe it's in the water, maybe it's to keep them warm over the long winter, or maybe they just raise their men right up there in Vermont. Whatever the reason, Vermont landed two fine men on the Top Six Beards of 2005. Here is young Teddy Turner. Ted makes this list because he refused to stop when others told him it was too much. "Ted, you already have the flowing golden hair of Apollo and the body of Adonis, stop there and give the rest of us a chance, please, we beg you." They thought it was too much, that one man couldn't carry that much hair on his head, that the women wouldn't be able to keep their hands off the tightly wound golden brown curls resting on his cheeks. You know what? They were right.

#2. Francesco Ferorelli
http://www.tvprty.com/Beards/porterfran.jpg
One of the more controversial figures of the beard world, Francesco (formerly known as Fran) hails from Manhattan. The adopted son of two Peruvian immigrants, Francesco was at odds with his parents for most of his youth. He resented the traditional beard worn by his father, a fifth generation goat herder, and lasted out against him and the world. At the ripe age of 22 he fled New York in a quest to find his inner spirituality. Shunning his friends and loved ones, he rode off to the south not to be seen or heard from for years. But when he returned he was a new man. On his face now grew the mightiest of beards, a spectacular fusion of dark hair and spiritually. It was at this time that mended the fissure that was growing between he and his father, he claimed the beard was a homage to his heritage and his parents welcomed him back with open arms. He still lives with them to this day.

#1. Saddam Hussein
http://www.tvprty.com/Beards/14cnd-saddam.slide3.jpg
While I recognize that this beard with stir some debate, I stand with conviction on this selection. Although Saddam's catapulted to beard-fame when he crawled out of his hidey-hole back in 2004 [did you know that his getaway vehicle was supposed to be a motorcycle!?] this man has successfully ridden that tsunami of positive beard press to the top of the beard world and established himself as a formidable beardo of years to come. Shortly after his capture be American forces last year, Uncle Same tried to pigeon-hole Papa Hussein as the dictator of yesteryear by shaving him down to just the soup strainer mustache. Saddam's beard story is one of perseverance. Whether staking his claim as the current president of Iraq [http://www.tvprty.com/Beards/saddamincourt.jpg] refusing to show for his own life or death trail or just being photographed in his underpants, Saddam has refused to bow to the infidels and has kept his beard strong. Each tiny hair flying the big ole' "fuck you" flag to the boys in Washington.

Greg Vegas (Hat City / ADA)
preface: in the age of iPods and Mp3 players, my listening habits have changed greatly. I listen to a lot more songs now (hence the long list of albums)- much on "random" play. so the Top Albums can be a bunch of albums by a particular artists. And most of these I would have never found if it weren't for some file sharing and reading about them in Artrocker, Uncut. MOjo, Pitchfork, etc. I do buy the CDs and more often vinyl of those that I really dig..

And there are no more release terrritories in my book- its a global listening village out there.
