"Rain of Ashes" is a journey, not of complex feelings, but of realizing the decay and collapse you have just witnessed is real and will never go away. Instead of completely pummeling the listener, the piece slowly rips the listener apart until there is nothing left. Though after Locrian's first full length "Drenched Lands", you might have to ask yourself, "is there anything left to begin with in the first place?" Rancor Keeper LP (Seacave)

Rancor Keeper is a maelstrom of deep, dark noise constructions, spewing forth torrents of contorted instrumentation (believe it or not there's cello, guitar, percussion and keyboards buried in here) and harrowed, wailing voices. Californian duo Alex and Britt seem to have refined their unholy din for this release, distilling the Robedoor sound to a godless horror show of atmospheric sonic punishment. While pieces like "Penitent Runes" and "Abyss Whisperer" certainly sound hellish, there's always some sort of harmonic cogency lurking in the details, but by the time we reach fifteen-minute closer "Wendigo Psychosi" the pair really plummet into the furthermost reaches of noise, initially falling through a gentle five-minute drone passage, before ultimately combusting into a feathery, distorted mass. the brother band of Pocahaunted perhaps?? edition fo 500. will fly. also check out the other ROBEDOOR lp we havde in the tmu store.

Ara is the Lexington KY-based duo of Sara O'Keefe and Trevor Tremaine of such outfits as Eyes and Arms of Smoke, Hair Police, Burning Star Core, Sick Hour, Death Unit, and Rampart Tapes board of direction. However these adjectives of death sick police, of those maybe there need to be new descriptions in place -- we're not quite sure what it is but in this alternate universe it could be the Peace Police, Skywatcher Hour, Life Unit, Colourful Star Party, etc. who are close neighbors. Fleeting "jazz" reference, male/female lowlife love vocals, drugstore basement electroacoustic, just warm and cloudy all over like a yesterday today. Feature the most complicated WHAT THE..? record covers so far, each unique handmade and silkscreened by Paul Coors; the materials you have grown come use to except melted together in rare effort. If Asakawa Maki were possessed with Iggy Pop's soul, if Lydia Lunch's spirit invaded Eri Chiemi, if Wada Akiko grew her hair out and popped some hallucinogens, still none would outshine Tokyo's enigmatic psychedelic kayokyoku/enka/chanson singer, NAGISA YOKO. Yoko has released five albums (including a 12"on Konishi of PIZZICATO FIVE's Readymade label) and a slew of singles. She has worked with producers as varied as 1960's "Group Sounds" legends HAPPENINGS FOUR and noise-musician turned literary superstar Nakahara Masaya (VIOLENT ONSEN GEISHA, HAIR STYLISTICS). This release is a special one-time collaboration between old friends Justin Simon and Nagisa Yoko. Justin's songwriting and production take Yoko into much weirder territory than her usual output. It also features fellow Yoko fan and notorious underground Tokyo journalist Naruse's ode to Yoko, recorded in Inogashira park. The B-side features a vinyl etching by Hisham Bharoocha (ex-BLACK DICE), meticulously carved onto a blank metal plate specifically for this collaboration. Takuyuki Moriya, bass player for GHOST, plays bass on one track as well. Justin is also in Invisible Conga People. 200 made! hand-numbered.

Family Underground collaborates with Dave Nuss of No Neck Blues Band. ---- Summer 06 Family Underground (DK) recorded with Dave Nuss of NNCK at Black Dirt Studios in the woods of upstate NY. The yield was as characteristically unhinged as one might expect: sweeping electronic sounds backed with wood and bone percussion spirit-conjure. However also harvested was some new and especially tasty crop: sung and spoken song, electric guitar 'rock,' and an odd ghostly sheen coating the entire proceeding. Nuss comments on the session: "i remember when we were recording, momentarily leaving the studio and going out into the night and feeling it thicken like a partition separating us from this intense state of clear consciousness we had in the recording, which was like humankinds natural state. And then thinking about Jesper from FU, an adopted Vietnamese living in DK, and how much he resembles Michael Jackson, and realizing that across continents no man can be divided from himself. We had to make this music to provide for us some fantasy of fulfillment that would carry us through the weekend like rejuvenated suns born again climbing to heaven, after being washed in the deepest bluest sea." Ben (Six Organs Of Admittance) and other Comets on Fire dudes do the killer noise thing. with killer crucifix style cover. INTENSE! "So what's this whole Chasny / NVH thing about anyway, well, you won't find any dreamy folky prettiness here. This lp is all about the noise. The noise a guitar and god knows what else can conjure up. This is some serious noiserock. Heck, there's no rock to speak of, this is just good ol' noise. But not really -just- noise, there's a whole lot going on. It's just all wrapped in some of the most corrosive seriously damaged skree we've heard in ages. Guitars careen everywhere, huge walls of crumbling distortion tumble onto blown out riffs, FX drenched squiggles are everywhere, angular melodies are twisted and tangled into psychedelic squalls, riffs are pulled apart into squealing keening roaring parts and hurled separately into the mix bouncing wildly off each other. Here and there the blown out rumbles coalesce into thick buzzing drones, and pretty melodies drift in and out, but are quickly overpowered. Imagine locking Keiji Haino and Kawabata Makoto in a a tiny room, armed with nothing but guitars, distortion pedals and a wall of amps each, dueling to the death, the results recorded and played back through a bank of busted effects. Wild and weird. And pretty fucking awesome. But definitely another one for the iron eared... Packaged in a super elaborate fold out sleeve, all black, with black printing, black inner sleeve, and the outer jacket unfolds into a massive (upside down?) crucifix!! Super limited too, so don't snooze on this one.....ltd to 666 copies. hurry.

unholy split cd. Akitsa is true black metal and Prurient is true black noise. Starts with five minutes ambient/noise which leads into the remaining fifteen minutes. Raw BM played at half-speed (different to the ABSURD/ILDJARN influence on albums like Sang Nordique), but vocals being the most impressive--tormented, painful with demented expression. Recorded somewhere between 2000-2003. Prurient does one 30 minute ambient/noise recording from the respected project of Dominick Fernow - "Fossil" recorded live February 13, 2003. Excellent work, uses soft classical pieces in the background contrasted with high electrical pitches and low-end frequencies, mixed with some live effects and highly distorted vocals (lyrics included in booklet). Ltd quantities!

As the last will and testament of Popular Shapes, 'B-Ball Music' is clearly Popular Shapes' most focused and cohesive effort. Savvy listeners will be reminded of The Fall, Le Shok, The Victims and Wire within these two tracks, assuming they weren't knocked over by the sweaty bodies splashing wine from a box. Intricate guitar interplay coasts freely like the plot of The OC while squirmy vocals free themselves from a box. The emphasis is clearly on song-writing, but the exuberance of four boys patting each other shirtless remains as bright a glare as Ford Explorer floodlights. It's rare that a band comes along where all the pieces fit seamlessly, equally throbbing and subdued. -(label ) This is OOP as well. Get it here. On killer splatter vinyl with full color heavy-stock covers and labels, thus the price.. But well worth it.
